How to Clean Different Boat Materials

Keeping your boat's exterior clean is crucial for several reasons. First, a clean exterior displays a boat's beauty and aesthetics, making it stand out from the rest in a marina. Second, routine cleaning prevents the spread of invasive species — plant or animal — since it is common for aquatic organisms to hitch a ride on a boat's underbelly. Lastly, keeping a boat clean preserves its finish and reduces the chances of erosion, especially for saltwater vessels. That said, cleaning a boat's exterior depends on the type of material used. This article highlights cleaning tips for different materials used on boats' exteriors.

Fibreglass

The hull of most boats is made of fibreglass due to its lightweight property. Notably, a glossy gel coat finish protects fibreglass from the elements, such as salt and direct sun rays. However, over time, the gel coat assumes a chalky appearance, indicating the need for cleaning. The best way to ensure that the fibreglass maintains a glossy lustre and protective property is to wax or polish it routinely. Besides, it should be done at least twice a season, especially before storing a vessel. Additionally, rinse the hull with fresh water after every outing. Marine service providers use a sponge to eliminate every drop of saltwater from a fibreglass surface.

Canvas

Canvas fabrics are typically found in cockpits, boat covers and sails. Canvas is a highly robust and durable material with proper care. Marine services focus on one thing when working with canvassed boat sections, maintaining the waterproofing properties intact. If the material loses this property, a boat owner experiences leaks and, in worse situations, mould growth. Cleaning the canvas fabric on your boat is not difficult since all you need is a light brush, soap and freshwater. Once you are sure the material is clean, rinse it thoroughly with fresh water until it stops lathering. However, avoid using ammonia-based detergents on canvas since the chemical compound damages canvas over time and strips it of its waterproof property.

Woodwork

Although wood is less common on modern boats, some manufacturers still use it on certain parts such as steps, deck floors and handrails. Teak is the most common type of wood used because of its durability. Although wooden boat parts are polished and mostly found inside a vessel, routine cleaning is necessary to keep the material looking pristine. The best way to clean wooden parts is to use a sponge with a mild detergent and scrub along the grains, not against them.
